Character: Clef
Series/Fandom: Magic Knight Rayearth
Deviance: 1
Age: 746 (looks like a teenager)
Gender: Male
Species: Human (Wizard)
Canon Used: The manga, with a few tender moments from the anime thrown in but nothing important to the storyline.
Appearance: Despite his short stature, Clef gives off a very powerful aura. It isn’t threatening so much as commanding; he’s used to being in charge, and it shows. Many people are surprised by his young appearance, though it’s because of Cephiro’s magic that he looks like this. He wears layers upon layers of lightly-colored robes, mostly white and blue, and a jeweled mantle. A gold and amethyst headband sits across his forehead, keeping his messy silver hair out of his face. His voice is smooth with just a hint of a British accent. He’s rarely seen without a lion-headed staff that’s at least twice as tall as he is.
Psychology: Clef acts as a mentor not just for the three hapless girls who were brought into his domain, but for all of Cephiro. Of all the sorcerers and sorceresses in the land, he is one of the strongest, wisest, and oldest. He taught many people, and as the highest-ranking mage he attended to Princess Emeraude, who was loved by all. He knows when to get serious and when to apply himself, taking charge of situations with a firm stance and calm, unwavering gaze. However, he is far more than just a capable and gentle leader.
Clef also has what can be fondly called a "berserk button". Clef claims to be hundreds of years old, but he's very, very short, and often mistaken for a child because of it. However, when he is discriminated against because of his height, he tends to lash out with his (six foot tall) staff. He also bristles a bit when people question his judgment.
However old and wise he may be, Clef feels at times that he is helpless. He and the rest of Cephiro placed their hopes, dreams, and wishes on the fates of the Magic Knights, because they came to accept they were too helpless to do anything themselves. In addition to this somewhat fatalistic side, Clef has a rather self-sacrificial side as well. He is acutely aware of the state of the world, and as the world hurts, so does he. When he comes face to face with one of his students who has joined the other side, he faces her alone so that the fledgling Magic Knights are able to escape. It is also revealed later that he is driven somewhat by guilt: he could not save Emeraude from her terrible fate, or keep the Pillar system from ripping her heart apart.
After watching Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu struggle to save his world twice, Clef and the others realized they would have to work together to rebuild Cephiro. No one should have to sacrifice themselves ultimately or turn away from love to sustain a lush, untainted world. Nothing was perfect. And they would have to work together, with cooperation from all the other failing countries. A brighter future awaits all of them as Clef learns to concentrate on something besides the failings of the past, acknowledging that the power to change comes from within.
Other Skills/Abilities: Clef is the strongest magician in Cephiro, enough that pretty much every major antagonist OR protagonist has mentored beneath him. He knows an incredible amount of magic, including offensive, defensive, and healing, though he prefers to fight with lightning elementals and shielding magic. His first power shown is that he can summon and communicate with animals. Clef is also seen summoning items out of netherspace with a wave of his staff, and he actually awakens magic inside people who otherwise lack it... If all this isn't enough to prove that he possesses one of the strongest hearts in Cephiro, the fact that he leads the country at one point in keeping their sanctuary together does. In a world where the strength of one's heart determines health, age, and magical power, he shines.
Other Weaknesses: Clef isn’t invincible. In the anime, he spends most of his time as a stone statue. He can be killed by a strong spell, or simply by a sword, though he’s dangerous with that staff in close quarters. People in Cephiro are basically humans with Fountain of Youth-like qualities.
History: Cephiro was once a calm and peaceful land, full of magic and wonders that exist only in legends. The dark truth beyond this beauty was that it was kept alive, protected, and untainted, by the prayers of an innocent, pure-hearted girl known as Princess Emeraude. She was the Pillar of Cephiro, and not the first. As long as there was not a selfish wish in her heart, the land would remain pristine. However... she began to resent herself and resent her position when she fell in love with High Priest Zagato, a powerful sorcerer. And he longed to give her freedom and save her from her awful, torturous fate.
Something terrible happened... and the Pillar began to fall. It seemed that Zagato was imprisoning her, but this was false. Torn in two directions at once, she used her faltering heart to summon three destined girls from a sister world, Earth. Clef knew the secret behind the Magic Knights, but kept it from them, gave them Mokona at Emeraude's behest and also gifts of evolving armor and magic. Clef realized that Cephiro was not truly beautiful, but he was helpless to do away with the Pillar System... When Emeraude was killed and the truth behind the Magic Knights revealed, Clef felt terrible for lying and dragging those girls into this.
And then it happened again. This time, Cephiro was losing bits and pieces of itself due to the lack of a Pillar. Clef's willpower and that of his people was the only magic holding the castle together. Again, the three girls were brought from the other world, though the heart that brought them remained hidden until the end. This time, they were racing against the other countries to find the Road the the new Pillar. Each wanted it for their own selfish reasons, but the Magic Knights fought for Hikaru, for themselves, for Cephiro. Hikaru was revealed as the true Pillar, and she wished for the Pillar System to be done away with-- as well as for Eagle, Lantis' best friend, to live... With that selfless wish, New Cephiro was born, and Clef, Ferio, and all the others would work to rebuild it.
Canon Point: Post-series.
Reality Description: (New) Cephiro is a beautiful land of emerald green forests and crystal oceans, a paradise envied the world over. The majority of people live in a floating crystalline castle that once contained the Pillar of Cephiro. It still is the heart of the world. This is also where Clef and his students live, and where the Magic Knights stay.
Cephiro used to be inhabited by evil monsters, but with the downfall of Zagato, the Pillar System, and the rebuilding of the world, evilness is in steep decline. Clef, as the de-facto advisor, is helping other countries to learn from Cephiro in order to save their own environments and peoples from destruction.
The thing that makes Cephiro special is how prevalent magic is. Magic is in everything. And willpower, of the Pillar and its own people, is what keeps it so green and beautiful. Clef is a normal human (relatively) but because of will, he has been able to maintain his young appearance for almost eight hundred years. The prayers and wishes of Princess Emeraude once gave the land life, and when her wishes turned selfish, the land began to decay. And finally, Hikaru's strength of will abolished the pillar system once and for all. So much good (or bad) can come from a strong heart, native to the world or not.
The first person of interest to Clef is Ferio, who is actually the prince of Cephiro now that his sister is gone. Then there are Eagle and Lantis, warriors of Autozam, the latter of which was Clef’s student at one point. Eagle is still recovering at Cephiro, having been plunged into a coma during the events of Hikaru’s initiation as Pillar, but he can speak telepathically. Then there is Presea the weapons smith, who seems to have a crush on Clef, but he’s oblivious. Last but not least are Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, the Magic Knights from Earth. He is particularly close to Umi, since he’s shown as her male counterpart on a few occasions, but whether they’ll acknowledge their feelings is another matter entirely.
